Apex Heat Pump vs. Central Air

Most Apex homes use one of two setups: a heat pump that both heats and cools, or a central air conditioner paired with a gas furnace. Both cool the same way in summer. The difference is heating: a heat pump moves heat from outside air into the home, while a furnace burns natural gas.

This guide compares them for Apex's climate and explains costs and permits.

How each works

A heat pump is an air conditioner that can reverse. In winter it extracts heat from outdoor air, even when it is cold, and uses electric resistance strips as backup on the coldest days. A central AC only cools; heating comes from a separate gas furnace. Both use the same duct system.

Climate fit

The Triangle has hot, humid summers and mostly mild winters, which suits heat pumps well; cold snaps are short. Homes with natural gas may prefer a furnace for the warm air it delivers, or combine both in a dual-fuel system. Without gas service, a heat pump is usually the practical choice.

Costs

Published 2026 national estimates put heat pump replacement at about $4,236–$7,942 and full HVAC system replacement at about $5,000–$12,500. Higher-efficiency equipment, variable-speed systems and duct changes raise costs. Operating cost depends on equipment efficiency and electric and gas rates.

Rebates and credits

Duke Energy's Smart $aver program offers rebates on qualifying heat pumps and HVAC equipment installed by participating contractors. The federal Section 25C credit is no longer available for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025, so do not count on it for a 2026 installation.

Sizing and ducts

Either system needs proper sizing from a load calculation, not just matching the old unit's tonnage. Leaky or undersized ducts reduce comfort and efficiency with either option; ask bidders to inspect them.

Permits

The Town of Apex requires a permit for replacing and reconnecting furnaces and for modifying HVAC systems. A licensed contractor submits the residential mechanical permit through the Town's ePermits system, and the work is inspected.

Frequently asked questions

Is a heat pump or central air better in Apex?
Both work; heat pumps suit the Triangle's mild winters well, while homes with natural gas may prefer a furnace or a dual-fuel system.
How much does a heat pump cost in Apex?
Published 2026 estimates put heat pump replacement at about $4,236–$7,942, with full HVAC replacement at about $5,000–$12,500.
Do heat pumps work in North Carolina winters?
Yes, they extract heat from outdoor air in cold weather and use electric backup or a furnace on the coldest days.
Is there still a federal tax credit for heat pumps?
Not for new installs. The IRS says the Section 25C energy efficient home improvement credit is not allowed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025.
Do I need a permit to replace an HVAC system in Apex?
Yes. The Town of Apex lists replacing and reconnecting furnaces and modifying the heating and air-conditioning system as permit work, and N.C. Gen. Stat. §160D-1110 excludes HVAC replacement from the $40,000 permit exemption.
Who pulls the mechanical permit in Apex?
The Town says residential single-trade mechanical permits must be submitted through ePermits by a licensed contractor.
